The moment owner says: “I didn’t know”

Updated: 1 day ago

There is a moment in veterinary practice that stays with you. When an owner quietly says: “I didn’t know.” Not loudly or defensively. Often with tears in their eyes. Sometimes in silence.

These words are never about indifference. They come from shock. From pain. From the sudden understanding that something important was missed. And almost always, they are followed by the same thought: “If I had known earlier…” As veterinarians, we hear this more often than people imagine. Because life is busy. Because symptoms are subtle and many changes look harmless at first.

A little less appetite. A little more sleep.

A small change in behaviour. Nothing dramatic. Nothing urgent. Until one day there is no way back.

This moment is heavy. For the owner. For the pet. For the veterinarian too. Because everyone in the room knows the same truth: earlier awareness could have changed the story. Not always the outcome. But at very least - the path to it.

This is why prevention is not a slogan in veterinary medicine. It is compassion in practice. It is the difference between reacting in confusion and acting with clarity. Between decisions taken in panic and those in quiet confidence. Between “I didn’t know” and “I noticed in time.”

That difference matters more than most of owners realise.
